What are the impacts of sexual abuse?

by Dan

Sexual abuse has many far reaching impacts on a victim’s life. The fallout of symptoms are dependent on a few important factors. The age of the abused victim, the relationship to the perpetrator, the duration of abuse, and severity of abuse.

The impacts are not cut and dry. There is not one exact constellation of symptoms. Here are a few symptoms of the impacts of sex abuse:

  • Relationship dysfunction
  • Gender identity disturbance
  • Poor self image
  • Self-esteem destruction
  • Anger/rage
  • Appetite disturbance
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Nightmares
  • Dreams of flight
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Fear of commitment
  • Paranoia/Hyper vigilance
  • “Door mat” syndrome – Doing more for others than yourself.
  • Feelings of despair

For many, the treatment is a life-long journey. One must open up and assess the impacts the abuse caused. One must become introspective, look at your shortcomings and how people perceive you. Realize it does not have to follow you through your life. There is hope, but only if you allow hope to enter your life. Remember, “the past is the past, that is why they call it the past.” Thank you Chris.

How the book,Above His Shoulders will help:

The impacts of sexual abuse are far reaching. In the book I address all of these and how it effected my life. I played a role, unaware at the time of how I impacted others. My experience with abuse impacted my friends, my  relationships, and my children. I give the reader hope that there is a rainbow after all thunderstorms.
