God and Life Trauma

February 15, 2009

Well, the comments are coming in, both on and off the blog site in reference to God and His role in life trauma, sex abuse and other atrocities. In no way do I suggest God does not play a role in aiding the victim. The question frequently arises to where is God in life trauma?

Individuals who have experienced pain of all sorts should rely on their own belief in spirituality, God, Supreme Being, or whatever their foundation is. THIS IS NOT A TIME FOR CONVERSION! When one is suffering, the last thing they need is to be presented with a new perspective. This is not to say that there will not be a time when this is appropriate. The victim needs to grieve, focus on their issues, and learn to rely on THEIR inner strength.

God gave us attributes to cope. Now is the time to empower those attributes. When resolution is reaching its peak, and should the victim be ready and open for new religious/spiritual experiences, then it is time to proceed.

It is the “my way is the only way” stance that is frequently looked upon with disdain. If there is only one way to the kingdom of Heaven, then I am afraid it is the size of a small closet. From my view of God, that is not what He wants; He is all-forgiving and accepting. God and spirituality has an important role. The victim’s feelings MUST always be considered first, with respect and integrity.
